Welcome to the Second International Symposium on Freeway and Tollway Operations. This second iteration of a very successful first ever symposium held in June 2006 in Athens, Greece has Active Management of expressway facilities as its core theme. The 2nd ISFO is designed to bring together freeway and tollway operators, practitioners and researchers specializing in freeway operations, highway toll operations and capacity analysis to:
- Capture the state of the practice in freeway and tollway operations including current programs and planned initiatives for active traffic management.
- Assess costs and benefits of active traffic management.
- Discuss ITS, managed lanes, and active traffic management.
- Explore the potential benefits of using managed lanes, tolling, pricing, and other strategies to improve traffic operations on congested freeways.
- Present methods and challenges for infrastructure financing and development.
Over 150 presentations are scheduled in 35 sessions. In addition to four parallel tracks of technical sessions, several important committee meetings will take place including meetings of the Freeway Operations committee, of the Traffic Control Devices committee, of ASCE’s Advanced Technologies Committee, and several subcommittees including the Active Traffic Management joint subcommittee of TRB . Representatives from several countries will provide status reports on the state of the art in their respective states and countries.
